This coures will have a class project, namely we will be trying to identify all of the old books in Denver area libraries that might be of interest to students/teachers/researchers of the History of mathematics. We will then create a webpage that lists all of the books we find and says a bit about them. For our purposes this will amout to cataloging all of the available books of mathematics (or written by mathematicians) printed before 1900.
I believe this will be about 20-40 books.
The Website will consist of pages on this wiki. Each library will get its own page on which all the available texts will be listed. Each book will then get its own page with information about the text including the author, publication date, condition, content, some assesment of the inport of the book. Also images, links to electronic versions, links to information pages (wikipedia page, etc.), links to tranlations (if not in english), etc where possible.
I envision covering the following libraries fairly completely.
- Denver Public Library
- Regis College
- University of Denver
Also if possible I would like to include (possibly to a lesser degree)
- CU Boulder
- Colorado College
This project can continue through the end of the course, however, topics for the term paper are due by week 6. After week 6 your attention will turn more and more to completing the term paper.
Division of Labor
The class will decide. There could be teams assigned to individual libraries or everyone could work alone then pool resources and assign individuals or teams to visit/research particular books. etc.
